Background:

  • Many face diseases and are looking for a cure
  • Some of us are dealing with all types of ailments and deal with fretting over things that we cannot change
  • The Lord is the cure for our fretting
  • We, who have embraced Jesus as Lord and Savior, do not need to fret
  • God specializes in the impossible and always shows up

Key Sermon Points:

1. David's counsel

  • Psalm is about wisdom
  • David is old now in the text
  • God has never forsaken us and has always showed up on time
  • We all need God's counsel to guide us and avoid self-deception
  • Self-deception is the act of convincing ourselves of a lie to protect our ego and avoid responsibilities or painful reality
  • Self-deception allows us to think we are ok when we are actually jacked up
  • The passage begins with a series of trying to encourage folks; each reveals divine wisdom
  • Fret means to be hot/heated, angry or restless and troubled about things we can't control
  • Do not waste our emotions or energy about things we can't change
  • Don't worry about evildoers
  • Don't wish to be in the shoes of evildoers or to wish for what they have (Psalm 73:2-3)
  • We should take a long look into the future because it only lasts for a little while
  • We may struggle with health, money, and/or work while others, who don't serve the Lord, prosper
  • God will bless the righteous and the unrighteous...with blessings comes responsibilities
  • Their success will only last on this side of the grave, but we must focus on things that are eternal

2. Trust in the Lord

  • We have to trust God no matter what
  • It is difficult to trust when nothing appears to be happening/moving
  • It's even harder when we take matters in our own hands
  • We mess a lot of things up when we take things into our own hands instead of trusting God
  • We have to resist the temptation to think that God has forgotten us
  • God's delay does not mean His denial...we have to wait because God works outside of time
  • Have patience and courage to wait for God to act on our behalf
  • We should always be willing to listen to His correction...God's Word
  • God's Word will counsel us
  • Trust in the Lord with all our hearts and don't lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6)

3. Delight yourself in the Lord

  • Delight in the Lord = finding our deepest satisfaction in God
  • Find our joy and pleasure in God
  • When we come to God's House even though we are going through things, we will forget about those things and get into the Spirit
  • The world did not give us joy and cannot take it away
  • Delighting in the Lord will result in God giving us the desires of our hearts
  • The hype of new things of the world will fade (e.g. new car, new home, etc.)...don't treat those things as idols and don't let them control us
  • Only God can satisfy us

4. Commit your way to the Lord

  • This means to turn our way over to the Lord and having faith in God instead of trying to control things
  • The weight is too heavy for us, but the Lord can bear our burdens
  • The battles are not ours, but the Lord's...we must hand things over to Him
  • God has to be in control because He knows better than us
  • It's time to turn things over to God and stop trying to do things ourselves
  • How to commit our way to the Lord:
  • Allow wrong things go...turn them over to God and pray (including corporate prayer where there is power)

5. Rest in  the Lord and wait patiently

  • True rest involves active patience...continuing in our daily lives without panic knowing that God is working behind the scenes
  • Peter learned this from Jesus (who was sleeping in the storm)...Peter later rested in Jesus when Peter was in prison and the angels had to wake Peter
  • We have to rest in Jesus too
  • Patience is developed by waiting on God
  • Active patience is actively preparing and waiting on God

6. Cease from anger and forsake wrath

  • The commandment tells people to stop being angry and let go of intent rage or fury because it will only lead to evil and harm to ourselves
  • Cain was disobedient and God rejected his offering
  • Cain was angry with God, but took it out on his brother
  • God warned Cain to deal with the anger before it turned into out of control rage
  • We should trust in God instead of reacting to wicked people
  • We have to be different and let our light shine
  • Anger is often the result of bad decisions
  • We have to learn to control our tongue because the tongue will get us in trouble
